Pope Reel: Formation & Tension Control

The Pope Reel is the final step in the papermaking production line, responsible for winding continuous paper webs into large rolls (usually called “master rolls” or “paper rolls”) for easy storage and further processing. It is both the end point of the papermaking process and the starting point for post-processing of paper products (such as coating, rewinding, and slitting).
Pope Reel Features
Pressure Zone Control: The contact pressure between the winding roll and the winding cylinder determines the roll tightness. Excessive pressure leads to crushing and wrinkling, while insufficient pressure results in a loose roll. Modern technology favors low-pressure operation, employing “variable geometry” technology for dynamic adjustment, with an adjustment range of up to 100%.
Tension Control: The tension on the paper web is crucial for quality. Excessive tension leads to paper breakage, while insufficient tension results in a loose roll. Maintaining constant tension is the core objective.
Torque Control: The auxiliary drive torque applied to the winding roll. On high-speed paper machines, the auxiliary drive can finely adjust the internal tension distribution, compensating for insufficient surface friction.
