Disc Thickener For Pulp And Paper Making

The disc thickener is a critical piece of equipment in the pulp production process, applied for the thickening and washing of low-consistency pulp to prepare it for subsequent high-consistency operations or transport. Within the pulp mill, it is typically positioned after the screening and purification stages—and prior to bleaching or refining—serving the dual purpose of managing the system’s water balance and recovering fibers.
Disc Thickener Features
I. Compact structure. Multiple discs are arranged in parallel, exponentially increasing the filtration area. The gravity-type design eliminates the need for vacuum systems or barometric legs, resulting in lower facility height requirements.
II. High capacity and energy efficiency. A single unit offers a filtration area ranging from tens to over a hundred square meters. The gravity-driven operation utilizes the hydrostatic pressure of the pulp slurry, eliminating the energy consumption associated with vacuum pumps.
III. Well-suited for short-fiber pulps. It demonstrates excellent dewatering performance for mechanical wood pulp, recycled paper pulp, effectively overcoming the challenges typically associated with dewatering short-fiber slurries.
IV. Graded filtrate recovery. Turbid filtrate can be recirculated to the upstream process to recover fibers, while clear filtrate can be applied for pulp discharge (doctoring) or directed to the white water system, facilitating both fiber recovery and water balance.
V. Clear path for optimization. The use of filter-bag-free sectors ensures more thorough filter cake discharge and increases the effective filtration area by approximately 5%, leading to higher rotational speeds and greater throughput. Additionally, the arc-shaped slots on the pulp-discharge water pipes allow for fine-tuning adjustments without requiring machine downtime.
In waste-paper pulping lines, the disc thickener is the optimal choice for balancing thickening efficiency with fiber quality. Email: leizhanpulper@gmail.com
